So I just completed Unity 3D’s “Space Shooter” project. It’s a beginner-level tutorial that guides you through building your own top-down “Space Shooter” style video game. It was a great learning experience, and a lot of fun as well. While I’ve had some experience in the past with game engines, it’s been a long time since I got my hands dirty with one, and my have the grown. It’s nice to get familiar with one of the most popular ones out there, and the experience has me wanting more – I plan on moving forward with the other Projects they have on the site, so I can further my knowledge of Unity and the concepts within.
While I had a great time with this from a game-building perspective, my real motivation was around Sound Design. It was the perfect opportunity to develop some new game sounds for a rather traditional style game/genre: to show what my slant and perspective is within that world. While I’ve done similar sounds before, it was great fun to start from scratch with a highly focused end-game from the start.
Check out the Space Shooter page to play the game and listen to all of the sounds created for the project in a SoundCloud file. Enjoy, and we’ll see how the next game goes!
